The department of Geography is one of the first fields which were established in joint form by the name of History-Geography following the establishment of the University of Tehran in 1934 on the basis of existing views on the classification of sciences in the past. Teaching geography was continued in the Faculty of Literature. In 1963, on the basis of the necessities resulting from the expansion of geography science , specialization of the field and the implementation of the new university system , the field of History-Geography was divided into two independent fields. And for the first time , the Department of Geography admitted student at undergraduate level.

Up to the year 2001, the Department of Geography had majors in human [geography], natural [geography] and cartography, but due to the following reasons, the idea of expansion of the department and changing it into a Faculty came into existence:
Increases in the fields and majors of the Department of Geography, rise in the number of the students, the lack of relation between the techniques of geography with the human science fields, its inclination towards environmental and space planning, finding specific position among other sciences, also to serve the scientific-educational objectives and scientific expansion of the country and create necessary and ideal space for the development of research facilities of geography

In October 2001, this idea was materialized and the establishment of the Faculty of Geography was approved by the Council of The Expansion of Higher Education. Following that and in the same year, the Faculty of Geography was founded with three educational departments: Human Geography, Natural Geography and Cartography.

The Faculty is administrated by Dr. Ahmad Pourahmad, as the Dean of the faculty in collaboration with 20 faculty members.
